Mission Statement
The Matthews Middle School Library is committed to ensuring that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The library partners with classroom teachers to instruct students in research skills and promote reading for learning and pleasure. The library provides a diverse collection of resources that enhance critical, creative, and independent thinking.
Objectives to accomplish this mission:
Provide physical and intellectual access to materials in varying formats, in an environment that is conducive to learning;
Offer guidance and instruction in the use of library resources;
Support the Matthews Middle School curriculum with materials and services;
Design learning experiences to develop independent use of Library resources;
Collaborate and partner with District 118 libraries and the Wauconda Area Public Library.
People
Ms. Mellendorf is our Library Information Specialist while Mrs. Olson is our Library Assistant and Mrs. Kuster is our Technology Assistant.
Ask Ms. Mellendorf for great reading recommendations and assistance with research projects and online resources.
Ask Mrs. Olson to assist you with checking out books, stamping your study hall passes, how-to's around the library and reading recommendations.Â
Mrs. Cittadino will assist you with questions about your Chromebooks, email, passwords, and loads of other techie things.
Reading
Matthews Middle School has a great collection of books for you to read! Fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, magazines, thick books, thin books, fantasy, science fiction, sports and science! A little bit of everything and something for everyone! We invite you to explore everything we have and ask us for recommendations.
Policies and Procedures for Checkouts and Study Hall Visits
All students may checkout up to 4 items at one time, excluding digital ebooks and audiobooks.
6th grade students must have a permission slip on file to check out YA (young adult) materials.
Checkout period is four weeks with two renewals for books. Students are encouraged to bring their book with them when renewing though it is not required. Library staff will re-stamp the date due slip of the book when renewing.
While there are no fines, you may not check out new items while overdue books remain unreturned.
Students should check their school email regularly for overdue notices and due-in-two-days notices.
Damaged or lost books will require payment for the book.
You may visit the library during your study hall with a pass from your study hall teacher. You may visit to check out books or work on class projects requiring library resources. Please check in with Mrs. Olson or Ms. Mellendorf.
Expectations:
Be respectful of other students and staff who are working in the library.
Be respectful of library materials and property.
Be responsible by coming prepared to work on assignments or reading.
Be responsible by returning or renewing your books on time.
Be safe by leaving food and drinks out of the library.
