How to Install and Activate
Read&Write is a Google Chrome extension found in the row of extensions next to the URL address bar on Google Chrome.
Click on the extension to activate it. On your first use of Read&Write, login with your D118 account and allow permissions.
If the extension is NOT located in the row of extensions next to the URL address bar, check the "puzzle piece" extension to make sure Read&Write is pinned to the extension bar OR go to the Google Chrome Web store, search for the extension, and click install.
Text-to-Speech Tools
Listen to text as it’s read aloud. Use the correct tool pictured below for the specific type of text: Google Docs, Google Slides, websites, or PDFs.
Speech-to-Text Tools
Talk&Type -- Speech-to-Text. Turns the spoken word into text by dictating into a microphone.
Other Tools in Read&Write
Prediction -- Provides word suggestions for word choice in writing and helps construct sentences.
Talking Dictionary -- Click the Dictionary icon and then double-click a word to define it.
Picture Dictionary -- Click the Picture Dictionary icon and then double-click a word to see pictures.
Audio Maker -- Converts selected text into an audio file, e.g. MP3, which will be automatically downloaded and can then be saved or shared.
Web Search -- Helps with research or looking for background knowledge by doing a one-click Google search for relevant information on a person, place or topic as well as an individual word.
Screen Masking -- Click the Screen Masking icon for a color overlay and reading guide line.
Talk&Type -- Speech-to-Text. Turns the spoken word into text by dictating into a microphone.
Translator -- Translates text to a target language; some languages can then be read aloud with speech-to-text tools.
Highlighters, Clear Highlights, & Collect Highlights -- Highlight key ideas in four colors, clear them or collect them and export to a Google Doc.
Vocabulary List -- Builds vocabulary lists in a Google Doc, including selected words, dictionary definitions, and an editable notes column.
Simplify Page -- Removes clutter from web pages and places the simplified text into a new tab. Use the + and - icons to remove pictures. Contrast, line spacing, and font controls are also available.
Rewordify -- Adjusts the reading level of text without changing the meaning.
Practice Reading Aloud -- Allows students to practice and record themselves reading selected text, listen to their recording, and send it to their teacher..
