All students must schedule an advisement meeting with the DGS during the first two weeks of the semester. This meeting will take approximately 45 minutes. Please email Dr. Collins at drcollin@d.umn.edu to request this appointment.
READ the CSD Graduate Student Handbook. Familiarize yourself with the Graduate School Policies, and the CSD MA policies and curriculum listed under "HOME" in the CSD Graduate Student Handbook.
Verify Official transcripts to CSD Department: Please make sure that the department has received official transcripts from all institutions where you completed coursework that applied to your undergraduate degree (e.g., university, community college, PSEO). Please contact Michelle Tessier to verify the transcripts are on file in the department.
Gather Undergraduate Syllabi to bring to the meeting: Gather syllabi for any undergraduate coursework completed outside of the University of Minnesota. You will bring these to the meeting with the DGS. Of particular importance are syllabi for courses that addressed the following:
Audiology and hearing science
Biological sciences related to human or animal sciences (e.g., biology, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, human genetics, veterinary science)
Physical sciences (physics or chemistry)
Social/behavioral sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, or public health)
A stand-alone statistics course
Courses you completed for your CSD major
Bring the syllabi for any undergraduate coursework completed outside of the University of Minnesota, especially for the areas listed above.
Transcript Review and Planning: At this meeting we will review your undergraduate transcript to ensure you have the necessary basic sciences courses (non-CSD), audiology courses, and a statistics course required for ASHA certification. If you are lacking curriculum in any of these areas, we will work out a plan for you to add this curriculum to your graduate program.
Graduate Program Overview and Planning: We will also be reviewing the general overview of the graduate program and the planned sequence of required CSD courses for your graduate program. Please review these materials BEFORE our meeting. If you have any other questions or concerns about your graduate program, this will be a good time to address those as well.
You will take your first semester of graduate courses this semester. For each credit, plan for an average of 3 hours of study outside of class... and sometimes more, depending on the complexity of the subject and your familiarity with it.
A challenge is to learn to balance the rigor of academic courses with the demands of clinical internship. A few words to the wise:
Fully commit to your academic courses. Without the knowledge, you cannot develop the clinical skills. Without the knowledge, we become technicians rather than professionals.
Take advantage of meeting with your faculty to help you succeed in your courses. All faculty hold office hours.
Course syllabi are useful documents that outline the purpose, learning outcomes, and expectations of the course. Read your syllabus and bring any questions to your instructor.
Select your topic and adviser.
Select your oral exam committee.
Complete your Plan B Proposal Approval form and get signatures.
To view past Plan B Papers, instructions to access the actual Plan B papers can be found in the CSD Plan B Guidebook.
You will have your first on-campus graduate internship this semester.
Please refer to the Clinical Education Handbook and the Robert F. Pierce (RFP) Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic Policy and Procedure Manual for details.
You will start planning for second-year internships in collaboration CSD faculty.
Find information regarding internships in the Clinical Education Handbook.
