SB57 is legislation that allows for a modified program option for exceptional and experienced teachers. The option provides for qualifying candidates to complete an induction program at a faster pace than the full two years generally required for completion of the professional teacher induction components. This option is made available to all participants if they meet the following criteria:
Eligible according to criteria listed below
Demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies required of all teacher candidates who complete the full-length program
All candidates are informed of the criteria and process for participating in the Early Completion Option (ECO) during the CUSD Induction Program orientation (New Teacher Institute) or during a meeting with a District Mentor. ECO information is also available on the Induction website, accessible by the public.
The Candidate must hold a preliminary multiple subject, single subject, or Education Specialist credential. The intent of the law is to serve experienced and exceptional candidates. “Experienced” is defined as a teacher who holds a preliminary credential and has 2 or more years of full-time teaching experience as the teacher of record (e.g. not as a substitute or after-school program teacher). “Exceptional” is defined as working at the integrating level of the Continuum of Teaching Practice, as verified by observations, rigorous positive evaluations, verification by two administrators (a current administrator/evaluator and one other administrator) of the teacher's exceptional skills in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) and appropriateness for the Early Completion Option (ECO), an accelerated completion of the induction program.
If the candidate feels that they meet all criteria, an application may be submitted to request ECO status. Please see information in this ECO Overview document for next steps in the application process.
