French and Spanish are academic electives. Students should only sign up for a language if they are prepared to complete homework and have tests and quizzes. Successful completion of 1B in a language may allow a student to enter French 2 or Spanish 2 in high school. Remember languages are year-long electives.

Building upon the lessons learned in French 1A, you will learn about people, places, possessions, French cities, giving directions, leisure-time activities, meals, shopping, and more! Welcome to Spanish 1A! Taking a world language is a high school graduation requirement. At Cupertino Middle School, you have the opportunity of getting ahead on this essential high school requirement. Spanish 1A is the beginning of a two-year program; it is equivalent to one year in high school. You will learn the essentials of the Spanish language and wonderful cultures, tell time, greet your friends, learn to order at a restaurant, and have many cultural events. These are some of the great activities that await you in Spanish 1A; speaking activities, skits, writing, listening activities, interactive educational games, music, educational DVDs, and food! Also, taking Spanish in middle school is your first step to obtain the Seal of Biliteracy recognition.
What is the Seal of Biliteracy?
This award is a state-level recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Students receive a seal on their high school diploma and can include their achievements in their college and scholarship applications.

¡Bienvenidos! Spanish 1B is the continuation of 1A. You will continue to learn about chores, weather, hobbies, shopping. We emphasize the verbal and written use of the language as you acquire more vocabulary and grammar! Some of the year's projects include piñata making, forecasting the weather, fashion show, and learning about different countries. Completing two years of Spanish in middle school gives you more time to learn the language’s foundations in a smaller group setting. We design our two-year curriculum to help you understand and utilize the language’s foundations in your future Spanish courses and real life. When you start early, you not only have a better foundation of the language you will also satisfy the world language high school graduation requirements sooner. Taking Spanish in middle school will give you more options in your high school schedule to explore more electives or AP courses and you will be on your way to obtain the Seal of Biliteracy recognition.
