Coding and Creating

Coding and Creating

This class has been designed for our 5th grade students. As students transition from the elementary schools to Ingersoll Middle School, we work on transitioning to STEM at the middle school level. During this class, the students have an introduction to what STEM is and how to solve problems. Our focus turns to using Scratch to create web-based apps. We build some apps together as a class and then the students have their choice of what they would like to build.

In this class, we utilize pair programming. This allows the students to work in pairs to code their apps. Each person has their own role. The Driver is in charge of the computer. They are the ones who do the actual coding. Meanwhile, the Navigator is the one who is hands-off the computer, but still needs to help out and direct their partner. During the course of one class period, the students switch multiple times to afford them both the opportunities to be the Driver and Navigator. By utilizing pair programming, the students work on their collaboration skills and allows them to bounce ideas off of each other as coding problems arise.
