Our Art Classroom and Choice Based Art Education
What does Choice Based Art Education and Teaching Artistic Behavior look like in our classroom?
Artwork by Cari (4th Grade)
What do artists do?
The child is the artist.
The classroom is the child’s studio.
Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) enables students to act and be treated as artists who direct their own learning. Choice Based Art Education (CBAE) enables students to independently choose and explore art ideas. Using these methods, students solve problems, ask questions, and seek possibilities in the classroom studio and the world around them. Students learn to persevere through difficulties and to trust their own judgment while becoming self-directed, organized, and engaged in their own creative journey.

Meet Mrs. Graham "Cracker"
I am the Elementary Fine Arts teacher for Community Unit School District 201 in Westmont, Illinois. I have been the Visual Arts Educator at CUSD201 for over 20 years. My teaching style derives from the schooling of Teaching for Artistic Behavior (also known as TAB or choice-based art) focusing on the Studio Habits of Mind (SHoM). My goal is to expose my students to a variety of media, artists, and techniques. My classroom practices encourage the students to make choices, problem solve, think and act responsibly, and become truly engaged in their work. Students will have art every week at both Manning and Miller.
