This year marked the 30th year of NCCBA! The NCCBA Program is an awesome student generated and voted upon program. Students nominate picture books and novels with copyright dates within the last 4 years during the prior school year. Those books with the most votes will make the next years list. Students read or listen to the books on the list during the school year and then they vote in March to determine the winners!
This exposes students to books they may never have found, but are loved by their peers across the state of North Carolina. It also empowers children to vote for the winner and see how they voted compared to the rest of the state. It is one of few awards programs that is completely chosen by students. This year we voted for Bad Dog as our picture book winner and Twenty-One Steps for our junior book winner.
Last year while voting electronically our awesome students persevered and voted for their favorites! Students selected Be Quiet!, written and illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins, to be the winner in the Picture Book Category, receiving 12,348 of the 49,513 total votes cast. The winner in the Junior Books category was Stargazing, written by Jen Wang, receiving 513 of the 3,068 total votes cast.
The previous year our students voted for Front Desk by Kelly Yang for the Junior Book category. They also voted for Can I Be Your Dog by Troy Cummings in the Picture Book category.
Winning authors are invited to receive their awards during the following October at the state library conference.
