Book Clubs

Book clubs are for all students. Some are for advanced readers, some are for those that do not like to read--yet, and others are just for fun. It is a great opportunity to build learning connections, provide self-directed reading experiences with some support, and provide necessary social interaction and discussion.

Last year our first graders were the first ones to participate. We read Ron Roy's A to Z Mysteries, The Absent Author as an introduction to chapter books and students did a wonderful job analyzing characters and trying to solve the mystery. We proceeded on to The Invisible island and started investigating with literature circles. I am hoping to get some of the other groups up and running this year.

Full of Beans by Jennifer L Holm is a companion to the novel Turtle in Paradise. This follows the story and misadventures of Bean Curtis in Key West, Florida during the depression. This is awesome as this book was also on the NCCBA junior list for 2019-2020. This is my pick for 4-5 this year.

The Boxcar Children is another mystery that is a good stepping stone book for second grade readers just getting into chapter books. This very large series of books is a great place to start because there are lots to follow if students are enjoying the story. They have also been released in a graphic format.

I am featuring a Narwhal & Jelly graphic for my "I don't like to read" students. The fun and whimsy of graphic novels along with the support of the images is a great supportive and fun book group book.

I am continuing to build collections of books that are awesome reads to add to the book groups going forward. Donations are always accepted for the media center. I am hoping to manage to put at least some of these groups during the day to give as many students access as possible.
