Speaking and Listening
There are two anchor standards that show the need for 21st century skills in Speaking and Listening...
The first standard is in Comprehension and Collaboration, Speaking and Listening anchor standard 2:
Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
With today's technology, students receive information in many different ways such as text, audio clips, videos, and animations. Students need to be presented information in these different formats, so they are resilient in their ability to listen, process, analyze and evaluate the diverse media they will encounter.
The second standard is in Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas, Speaking and Listening anchor standard 5:
Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.
This anchor standard is one of the most technology embedded standards in the ELA standards. It focuses on the presentation skills of students and the different technologies they should strategically use to convey their message. Through the grades students move from adding pictures to audio recordings to multimedia components all with the purpose to intent to purposely enhance their presentations. Students should not only have practice presenting, but also have discussions about when and why to include accompanying media into their presentations.
