Reading
There are two anchor standards that show the need for 21st century skills in Reading...
The first standard is in Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, Reading (Literature and Informational text) anchor standard 7:
CCR.7 - Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.
This anchor standard and its complementary grade specific standards, acknowledge that when reading literature or informational text in a digital format students can and will encounter more than text. It is this additional component (pictures, multimedia, videos, etc.) that students will also need to analyze on how it relates, compares, or contributes to the story. As students progress through the grades they should be reading text digitally with additional multimedia components.
The second standard is in Craft and Structure, Reading (Informational Text) anchor standard 5:
CCR.5. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.
This anchor standard for Informational Text has students analyze the different components of both printed and digital text. In particular, for digital text it is understanding how menus and search tools assist in locating information.
