About Darren

Darren Alcala is the current District Technology Instructional Coach for Cucamonga School District. As a student in Cucamonga SD himself, Mr. Alcala saw firsthand the strengths and areas for improvement in the school district, and now he has dedicated his now 25+ year career to serving the students in his community. He began as an instructional assistant and then became a classroom teacher where he taught both at the elementary and middle school level. He is now currently going on his 10th year as the District Technology Instructional Coach. Mr. Alcala is passionate about creating engaging learning experiences integrating technology for students of all ages. As a computer science credentialed teacher, he also works hard to design integrated educational experiences to give underrepresented groups meaningful experiences in computer science so that they have the tools that they need to be successful. 


He has presented several times at the Spring CUE conferences in Palm Springs on both the integration of educational technologies and computer science. He has additionally presented at Fall CUE conference, ISTE Live Conference and the CSTA conference on similar topics. Darren is also a Computer Science consultant for the Digital Learning Services department at San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and has been featured on their podcast, Bits and Bytes. He has additionally presented for UCLA Center X. 


He is a Google Certified Educator, Microsoft Certified Educator, Nearpod Certified Coach, and a Micro:bit Champion. In March 2023, he was featured on Birdbrain Technologies' Flocking Amazing Podcast. Darren also has been an Inland Area CUE board member for the past several years with the past three years serving as the Board President. Darren has also starred on multiple episodes of the KVCR/PBS TV show Learn with Me.
