his orange paw swatting tirelessly
at some invisible mouse
that spun round and round.
The little black planet remained unbothered
in its orbit
as Elvis crooned.
Wise men say
another year goes by
Only fools rush in
and then another.
I lay on my couch, staring at the ceiling,
listening to nails scratch vinyl,
take down worlds.
My ears did not flinch as they took in the new
scratches
skips and
bumps
as they formed
on what was once a stable world.
