Matthew Sawtelle studies philosophy at Catholic University (class of 2023). Sawtelle serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Vermilion. He has previously been published in Vermilion. This piece was inspired by some of the couplet poems written by Timothy Steele in his book Toward the Winter Solstice. It was inspired by real events.
While every driver sighs, curses, and flips
Me off, she lifts the wand up to her lips
And breathes a gust of bubbles Northbound down
Our Southbound home commute. So now that frown
Which I was somehow pleased and proud to wear
Seems much more pitiful than debonair,
And for some patience I have her to thank
While waiting, stranded, with my empty tank.
