This video (04:28) steps takes you through the entire process of collecting your baby's spontaneous movements.
You will collect three (3) minutes of your baby's movements when s/he is just moving not prompted by any stimulus.
The individual steps are listed out below, with time codes so you can refer back to the video. .
The No Touch Walk Thru assumes that you have already viewed the GO HUGS video. We recommend viewing it now if you haven't already done so.
Note: The preliminary steps are the same for both No Touch and GO HUGS.
Once the USB cables are connected (refer to Step 7 on the Assembly page), plug in the laptop and turn it on.
When prompted for a pin, enter the number written on a piece of red tape near the computer name plate, on the right side of the laptop, as you look down at the keyboard.
Make sure the laptop is connected to WIFI.
The data you collect during the session will automatically upload to the study’s OneDrive account in the cloud.
The study team will verify that everything went as expected and create backup files on CUA’s server.
Notice that there are several icons on the desktop.
The ones you will be working with to collect your baby’s grasp data are “GO HUGS,” the app that records the forces your baby generates when playing with the bar toy
“NO TOUCH”, the app that times your baby’s spontaneous hand and arm movements for the video and “RS,” the app that brings up the camera interface controls.
Check that the camera bar is in front of your baby and the camera swiveled on its mount to capture your baby’s movements from the front.
The HUGS toy bar should be moved out of the way.
See Framing the Scene.
Click on the No Touch icon on the desktop.
Unfortunately, you lose the instructions in the popup when you do this. (Our little homemade GUI is a work in progress.)
Clicking on No Touch icon down on the task bar will bring the message window back.
If you are have not just set up the camera to collect Grasp Data:
Click the dropdown arrow before "Stereo Module."
Check to make sure that Resolution is set to 640 x 480 and that the frame rate is set to 30 fps.
Click “Stereo Module” ON (or verify that it is on if you have just collected Grasp Data).
What you are seeing is the feed from the depth sensor in the 3D camera.
Next, If you are have not just set up the camera to collect Grasp Data:
Click the dropdown arrow before "RGB Camera."
Check to make sure that Resolution is set to 640 x 480 and that the frame rate is set to 30 fps.
Click “RGB Camera" ON (or verify that it is on if you have just collected Grasp Data).
This is the 2D camera feed.
Use this opportunity to make sure that you can see your baby’s shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands in the video window.
Use this opportunity to make sure that you can see the entire play bar in the video, and that your baby is positioned so that s/he can reach the bar.
Positioning will change as your baby gets older and you will likely move to a different baby seat.
Make sure your baby can reach the bar and that s/he is positioned so that grasping with one arm of the other is equally likely.
Remember that you can adjust many aspects to get the "picture" right.
You can move the toy frame.
You can swivel the camera in any direction.
You can move the infant seat.
You can reposition your baby.
Message come back up when you click on the No Touch icon on the task bar.
Once everything looks good to record, click on the “Record” button in the camera controls.
Now you can click OK on the message button. You don’t need it anymore.
Now you are back in the No Touch dashboard.
Note that there are just 2 buttons on the display: No Touch and Stop.
Click on No Touch. A timer starts. The timer will run for 3 minutes (180 seconds).
Try to avoid stimulating your baby during the next three minutes. You will know best how to approach this. Some babies are stimulated when they see their mom (dad, other caregiver) and will fuss to interact. Some babies are just the opposite; they will get upset if they don’t know where you are.
If you baby becomes upset for any reason, please comfort him/her. The data can be collected at another time or collected for a shorter period than 3 minutes.
Timer ends.
Popup comes back.
Click Stop.
Go back to camera.
Click the Record button off to end the data capture. Upload will begin automatically.
If you are done collecting data (i.e. you have already collected your baby’s grasp data), you can shut down the camera app as well as No Touch.
There is no graceful way to end either of these apps. Just click the “x” in the upper right corner.
Leave the laptop turned on and connected to WIFI for a few minutes just to make sure the data file uploads.
The spontaneous movements data will typically be the largest file you generate as it is 3 minutes long. You can expect it to be several GB in size!
Now is a good time to take a break if you haven’t yet collected your baby’s grasp data yet.
If you have, good to put HUGS away until the next session in two weeks.
We will check the data you captured within 24 hours and let you know that everything uploaded ok.
