Third year students of Department of Chemistry in association with Consumers Club visited the campus neighborhood on 24 May, 2022 and collected some food ingredients like turmeric, coffee, tea, milk etc.,from their houses and test it for adulteration. This testing really created awareness among them and Adulteration should be checked properly in common food items so as to save people from its bad effects.
Water is one of the most precious natural resource. The surface of the earth mostly consists of water, although only a part of it is usable. This precious and limited resource, therefore, must be used with care. As it is required for different purposes, the suitability of it must be checked before use. Water analysis was done by the II year students of Department of Chemistry in association with the NSS on 31st May 2022 and 1st June 2022. Nearly 25 water samples were collected from the campus neighborhood and analysed the content of Chlorine, Fluoride, pH, Hardness and Alkalinity, etc.,in it.
Students of II B.Sc. Chemistry went on an eco-trip to the Horticulture Park, Madhavaram on 4 May, 2022. This trip was organised in order to encourage the students' natural curiosity. They observed various plant species, understood significant information about plant life and bought wide varieties of plants from the park.
Aurum Club had organised a Hands-On Training Programme on 'Biogas Plant' and it's maintenance on 27 April, 2022. The Resource Person was Mr. D. Suresh who is popularly tagged as 'Solar Suresh' for his self-sustaining and eco-friendly lifestyle. Guidelines on proper maintenance and usage of the Biogas Plant in the College campus were given to the students of the Chemistry Department.
A State Level Workshop on 'Molecular Modelling Tools' was organized by the Department of Chemistry on 23 April, 2022 in the College campus. The Workshop was inaugurated by Dr. V. Rajapandian, who highlighted the 'Eagle view of Science.' The objective of the Workshop was to familiarize the students with knowledge of Molecular Modelling and the conceptual background of 'Computational Chemistry.' Hands-on Training on Molecular Modelling Tools was given to the students of various colleges.
The Valedictory Ceremony for the academic year 2021-2022 was held on April 23, 2022 and was felicitated by Dr. V. Rajapandian, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore. The Annual Report for the academic year 2021-2022 was presented. The Aurum Club's annual newsletter 'Catalyst' (Vol. 3) was released by the Chief Guest. Student achievements were listed and the prize winners of various competitions conducted by the Aurum club were announced.
Department of Chemistry in association with Centre for Student Development organised an 'Entrepreneurial Expo 2022' and officially launched an organic product based company 'Milir' on April 07, 2022 at T. Thomas Auditorium. Milir is 'The Radiance of Nature'. Milir's principle objective is promoting nature friendly products derived from plant based materials. This involves a few research based small scale projects by the students of the Chemistry Department, thus creating a path for future entrepreneurs and women leaders. The Entrepreneurial Expo was inaugurated by Mrs. T. Vanadhi Devi, President, Southern Industrial Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Development, Chennai. The natural products of 'Milir' including varieties of soaps, organically dyed fabrics, soil conditioners, organic fertilizers, pesticides and recycled notebooks were on sale at the Entrepreneurial Expo.
Students of the Chemistry Department visited Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. located at Old Mahabalipuram Road, Sholinganallur, Chennai on March 26, 2022. The main objective behind the visit was to give students exposure to better industrial and business practices in progressive economics. Students also visited the cultural heritage site 'Mahabalipuram' and witnessed the vibrant art and architecture.
Final year students of the Chemistry Department went on a one day trip to MGM Dizzee World on 9th March 2022. The fun and adventurous trip enlivened students to come out of their confines and served as a stress buster. Students were taught the water management practices followed in the theme park.
Final year students of the Chemistry Department visited the 45th Chennai Book Fair organised by the BAPASI on 3rd March 2022 at YMCA, Nandanam. Students eagerly visited various book stalls and purchased books of their interest.
To commemorate the discovery of the Raman-Effect by Indian Physicist Sir. C. V. Raman, National Science Day is observed every year on the 28th of February. On this occasion, the Departments of Basic Science (Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry) in association with the Center for Student Development – Institution’s Innovation Council of our College organized activities in the schools in and around Chennai from 28th February 2022 to 2nd March 2022 that demonstrated the concepts of Basic Science and the process of scientific investigation. This helped the school students to develop a broad understanding of concepts in 'Basic Sciences.' A total of nine hundred students from fifteen schools all around Chennai had benefited from this activity.
The Aurum Club of Chemistry Department organized an online Intercollegiate contest 'Chemfest' which focused on giving exposure to students of real life examples related to Chemistry and encouraged the students to go above and beyond their textual knowledge. 'Chemfest' comprised three individual events namely Rasayana, Chemi Dossier and Element Hunt. Rasayana was a video making competition themed 'Chemistry in the ancient world', Chemi Dossier was a case study competition themed 'Entrepreneurship in Chemistry/Chemistry Entrepreneurs.' The Element Hunt was an event in which the participants were asked to identify and document the elements of the periodic table found in their household items. The events were open to all college students.
The Aurum Club had organised an in-house lecture on 'Spectroscopy - An Overview' via Google Meet on 28th January 2022 at 4.00 pm. As spectroscopy plays a major role in scientific research, the fundamental concepts of Spectroscopy were introduced to the students of the Chemistry Department. Dr. T. Ramya, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women was the Resource Person for the in-house lecture.
The Aurum Club of Chemistry Department organized a webinar on 'NMR Spectroscopy' on 30th December 2021 at 10.00 am via Google Meet. The main objective of the webinar was to educate the students on the fundamentals of NMR Spectroscopy. The Resource Person of the webinar was Dr. L. Parimala, Head and Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Annai Violet Arts and Science College. Around thirty five students from various colleges benefited by attending the webinar.
An Open Quiz on 'Energy Conservation' was organized for the students of the Chemistry Department on 'National Energy Conservation Day', December 14, 2021 in the Chemistry Laboratory following all pandemic protocols. The Open Quiz was conducted to evaluate the knowledge of science stream students on 'Energy Conservation.' This helped the students to know their existing knowledge while stimulating their interest in learning more about energy conservation. The quiz covered all the basic energy conservation methods and concepts. There was no screening round. All the participants were allowed to answer in every round. Based on the average score derived from all the rounds, winners were declared.
On account of the National Festival Diwali, a debate on 'Are Firecrackers Essential?' was organised on 1st November 2021 by the Department of Chemistry in the college campus. Students of III B.Sc. Chemistry were split into two teams and they had a lively debate. This enabled critical thinking and students shared their views on celebrating Diwali with and without crackers by pointing out the pros and cons of bursting crackers.
An Inter Departmental PowerPoint Presentation Competition 'Beauty and the Chemists' was conducted on 25th October 2021 in the college campus which focused on the contribution of Chemistry to the cosmetic world. This competition enabled the students to know, analyse and understand the science behind their skin care products and provided a way to explore the cosmetic world. Besides, this improved their presentation skill, designing skill and creative thinking. Pandemic norms were strictly followed throughout the competition. Participants were registered through Google forms and their presentations were collected as a soft copy via Gmail. The Maximum duration allotted for each presentation was five minutes. Students of various streams came out with different inputs and presented their analysis and observation demonstrating their interest in science and cosmetics. The presentations were judged by Dr. S. K. Gayathri, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, C. T. T. E. College for Women, who has fifteen years of theater experience and owns more than three beauty pageant titles.
The Department of Chemistry celebrated Ayudha Pooja on 13th October 2021 with devotion. This is a traditional and significant festival in India. Students sang devotional songs, drew rangoli, shared sweets and the laboratory was decorated colourfully. This is when we express our gratitude for all types of instruments and apparatus that are an integral part of our scientific experiments and it is considered to be the celebration of triumph over sins.
An Online Training Programme on E-Content Development was organised from 6th September 2021 to 13th September 2021 for the students of CTTE and other colleges via Google Meet. As everything shifted to online mode on the outbreak of the Pandemic, this training programme focused on training the students to develop creative E-Content and to help them organize online content using Google tools and other designing tools. The programme was conducted for seven days comprising seven sessions and each session was for one hour (2pm - 3pm). The Resource Persons were Ms. C. Hemavathy, MCA, Content Manager, Digital Marketing Lead, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women and Mrs. J. Vijayalakshmi, MCA, Programmer, Department of Computer Applications, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women. The Resource Persons gave meticulous training to the participants on developing E- Content. Around forty students enthusiastically participated to learn the basics of editing. It was useful as they could apply their learnings in their online based academic and extracurricular content creating activities.
The Department of Chemistry celebrated Teacher's day on 5th September via Google Meet. Students came up with various ways to honour the noble profession. Students expressed their love and respect for teachers through drawings, posters, videos and memes. Students also expressed their gratitude to all the teachers by delivering speech, reciting poem and singing song. Students also remembered Dr. Elizabeth Thomas, Co-founder of C. T. T. E. College for Women on her death anniversary. Students made a video highlighting her vision of establishing a women’s college and paid tribute to her services. It was a great opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and service of teachers in bringing up a healthy society.
The Department of Chemistry organised a virtual quiz themed “Know your Nation” to celebrate the month of independence. It was conducted on 31st August 2021 in the G-Meet platform. The idea behind organising this quiz was to make the students aware of current affairs and know about the cultural diversity of India. The quiz had a prelim which was conducted through Google forms. The first round had questions from current affairs and the second round was a picture quiz. Five students were selected for finals. Students showed high enthusiasm in participation and gained knowledge about the nation.
The Department of Chemistry organised a Tamil debate on the topic "Role of Youth vs. Elders in Retaining the Essence of Independence”. Students of II and III years enthusiastically participated and expressed their views. Dr. K. Preetha , Head, Department of Languages, judged the debate. The students had a war of words and expressed their emotions toward the betterment of the nation. The students showed love and respect for their motherland in stating their argument. Dr. K. Preetha announced that the team that spoke in favor of the elders was the winner. She also stressed the importance and the responsibility of youth in the development of the country.
The Aurum Club organised an Interdepartmental E-Poster Competition on 15th August 2021. It was held under the theme “Contribution of Indian Chemists in Science and Technology.” This competition provided the students with an opportunity to learn designing, in turn strengthening their learning as it helped them to present scientific information in a creative and abstract way for better understanding. Students showed their creativity in ideating beautiful and informative posters explaining the inventions of Indian chemists. The posters were judged by Dr. T. Adi Naveen, Assistant Professor, Loyola College. E-Certificates were provided to all the participants.
The Aurum Club conducted a picture connection quiz 'Chem-Connect' from 19th July 2021 to 21st July 2021 via Google form for school and college students in order to improve their in-depth thinking. The quiz had thirty questions each carrying five points. E-Certificates were provided to the participants who scored above 50%. Students from various schools and colleges enthusiastically took the quiz and enjoyed thinking out of the box. Chem-Connect motivated the students' interest in chemistry and reinforced the basic terms of chemistry.
The Aurum Club organized an online contest "Chemistry in Cooking" on 7th June 2021, World Food Safety Day. Students were asked to select their favorite recipe and explain all the possible chemistry involved in it, including composition, chemical process etc. Participants were asked to submit their observations in any innovative form with accurate details. Students explored the interesting chemistry hidden behind various recipes including gulab jamun, payasam, cake, chicken dishes etc., and submitted their observations as videos, comics and presentations. This contest encouraged the students to look beyond their textual knowledge and also facilitated creative thinking and extensive research. Students' observations were judged by Dr. K. Thenmozhi, Assistant Professor - Senior, Department of Chemistry, School of Advanced Sciences, Vellore Institute of Technology. E-Certificates were provided to all the participants.
