On 22/03/2021 Career Guidance Programme was conducted by the Department of chemistry.The programme was conducted in the G-meet platform.The guest speaker was Dr. S. Chandrasekar, Research Investigator, Syngene International Ltd., Bangalore, India. He educated the students about future applications, job opportunities and higher education in the field of chemistry. Students and professionals from various fields became aware of the opportunities in the field of chemistry.
National Symposium was organized by the Department of Chemistry on19/03/2021 and 20/03/2021. It comprised of four sessions. The symposium started with the release of Aurum Club's annual newsletter 'Catalyst' (Vol. 2). The following were the guest speakers of the National Symposium:
1. Dr. V. Ganapathy, Scientist, Centre for Solar Energy Materials, International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, India.
2. Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
3. Dr. A. S. Ganeshraja, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, National College (Autonomous), Dindigul Road, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.
4. Dr. A. L. Muthukumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Kurinji College of Arts and Science, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.
Students and Professionals from various fields gained exposure on “Fundamentals and Advancements in Chemistry”.
On 03/03/2021 National Science Day was celebrated. Various Inter and Intra department competitions were conducted to grow interest among the students on learning new concepts of chemistry. National Science Day 2021 was celebrated under the theme “Science, Technology and Innovation – Impacts on Education, Skills and Work”. Students out showed their skills in competitions like Doodle Art and Chemotsav.
Republic Day 2021 was hosted by the Department of Chemistry.The National Flag was hoisted by the Principal, Dr. S. Sridevi, followed by her special address. The celebration had cultural aspects such as semi classical dance, street play and villupaatu. The students exhibited their talents and were motivated by the Principal.
▪️Ecobrick
Students of the Department of Chemistry made efforts to reuse the plastic waste in a classroom activity.Students were instructed to fill a plastic bottle with plastic wrappers that can neither be recycled nor decomposed. A small construction in the campus is planned using these ecobricks. Considerable amount of household plastic waste turned into useful bricks. Students learned about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment.
▪️Just a minute (JAM) talk
Virtual Classroom Activity was conducted to cultivate speaking skills for the students of I B.Sc. Chemistry. Students were given 50 topics related to chemistry and were asked to talk for a minute on any of the given topics. Students developed communication skills and gained knowledge on various topics related to chemistry.
▪️Presenting an article
Virtual Classroom Activity was conducted for the students of II B.Sc. Chemistry. Students were given an article on the evolution of the periodic table and were asked to share their views about the article. The students gained knowledge on the invention of modern periodic table and developed speaking skills.
▪️Food sample collection
A Classroom Activity was conducted for the students of III B.Sc. Chemistry to give exposure on real life application of chemistry and organic functional groups. Students collected food samples that contain organic functional groups and prepared a kit demonstrating its structure and uses.
▪️Presenting an article
Students of III B.Sc. Chemistry was given an article. Students recorded a video for one minute in which they presented their views on the article. They gained knowledge and developed their presentation skills.
International Science Day Celebration took place on 10/11/2020. The International Science Day 2020 was celebrated under the theme “Science for peace and development”. Various Inter and Intra department competitions were conducted for the students of Science Departments to generate interest in chemical science and to involve them in skill based activities.The celebration had various competitions like Quiz, Rangoli and Explore the chemical reaction. The students emerged with different innovations and acquired interest in the subject.
Being the second leading cause of death, Cancer needs more attention from people. So students of the Department of Chemistry created a short awareness video on cancer its symptoms.
Students of II B.Sc. Chemistry made a short video to create awareness on wearing mask. The students featured in the video themed ‘Break the Chain’, where they demonstrated the importance of wearing mask in the correct way.
To generate interest in the subject and appreciate the importance of Avogadro number, various competitions were conducted on account of International Mole Day. International Mole Day is celebrated on 23rd October from 6.02 am to 6.02 pm. The theme for International Mole Day 2020 was ‘MOLEZILLA’. Students learned the significance of Avogadro number and expressed their creative skills in the form of Pencil Sketch, Doodle Art, Poem etc.
In the phase of pandemic, students of III B.Sc. Chemistry made a short video to create awareness about the methods and importance of washing hands. Though the students were not present in the college, they gave their fullest contribution in making the video themed “Hand Hygiene for all”.
Aurum Club of Department of Chemistry celebrated Teachers Day on September 5, 2020 through Google Meet at 5.00 PM. Students of Chemistry Department paid tribute to teachers through video, memes, debate and kavithai. The services of Dr. Elizabeth Thomas were also remembered by the students on her death anniversary.
