The Resource person for this programme was Mr.Prabhu Natarajan, APAC Cloud GRC Regional Director.
To develop and build technologies and techniques strong analytic and mathematical skill is required. In this session he explained more about the application of mathematics and statistical algorithm and concepts in handling of larger data and detecting cybercrime incidents also he motivated the participants to have a strong knowledge in mathematics to develop their career.
On March 20, 2021, the Sigma club organized a National Symposium on the topic “Trends in Linear Algebra”. The resource persons are Dr.Natarajan Elumalai, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Kerala, India, and Dr.A.Tamilselvi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, University of Madras, Chennai. The symposium comprised of two sessions. Both the sessions were very informative.
The session was started by Dr.A.Tamilselvi on the topic “Linear Equations in Linear Algebra”. She gave a brief exposure to Geometrical Representation of the vectors in Euclidean space, Linear combinations, Matrix equations, Linear transformations, Shear transformations, and rotations graphically. The second session was continued by Dr.Natarajan Elumalai on the topic “The Computations aspects of Gaussian Elimination method”. He explained and compared how the basic Cramer’s rule and the Gauss Elimination method are used to solving linear equations. He gave an insight about the concepts through various examples like weather modeling, etc.
At last during the question session participants interacted with the resource persons and clarified their doubts and acquire knowledge about the topics discussed in this symposium. Nearly 100 participants including Faculties and students in and around India were benefitted from this symposium.
Inter Departmental Competition held on March 15, 2021 under the supervision of Mrs. Poorani.P . It was organized in RF2 and participants from various department were actively participated. The major events were Sudoku and Crossword Puzzle.
The Sigma Club of the Department of Mathematics, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women organized an E-Quiz to celebrate World Mathematics Day on October 15, 2020 and National Mathematics Day on December 22, 2020. The E-Quiz is conducted through Google quiz form. We prepared a Whatsapp message to promote the E-Quiz. The Whats app message contain greetings, instructions and the link to attempt the E-Quiz. More than 400 participants actively participated in this Quiz and they got the result immediately after finishing it. Participants scored above 60% in this quiz awarded with an E- Certificate.
The Sigma Club of Department of Mathematics, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women conducted an intradepartmental activity “Pencil Sketching on images of Fibonacci sequences” to celebrate Fibonacci Day on 29th November 2020 for the UG students of the Maths Department. The pencil sketching is conducted through Google meet. Students from our department actively participated and exhibited their talents in pencil sketching.
Ms.Praisia Joice R, Student Coordinator, III B.Sc Maths and Ms.Jhansi Rani F, Assistant Student Coordinator, II B.Sc Maths prepared a PPT on Fascinating Fibonacci Series and posted it in Google classroom for the students to learn more about the Fibonacci sequence that leads to fascinating discoveries.
The Department of Mathematics of Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College for Women organized a webinar on June 9, 2020 on the topic “Graph Colorings and its Applications”. Dr. J.Vernold Vivin, Assistant professor, Department of Mathematics, University College of Engineering, Nagercoil was the resource person for the webinar. He began with a brief introduction on the history of Graph Theory followed by explaining the Konigsberg bridge problem which was the origin for the development of Graph Theory. Some basic definitions and theorems in vertices, edges, simple graph, connected graph, parallel edges etc., were discussed and further explained about the concepts and theoretical proofs of clique, maximal clique, chromatic coloring, and chromatic number through different graphs.
On discussing the practical applications of Graph Colorings and its Chromatic number, Dr.Vernold Vivin explained a simple graph coloring which efficiently helps to design a fish tank with different exotic fishes to place it in the reception, allocation of different classes for different subject teachers and airplanes routine maintenance at the different service point of the regional airport and so on. These practical examples showed the importance of the subject Graph Theory in real life situations. Following that he highlighted some concepts and results in his précised research area of Graph Theory such as Harmonious Coloring and Harmonious Chromatic number. Also explained, the embedding of central graphs in the Greenwood Gleason graph, Robertson graphs and bounds for the Total Graph and Middle Graph of cycles.
Finally, he concluded the session with the applications of Harmonious colorings in Radio navigation system.
Students from various city colleges, research scholars, Professors from different Institutions benefited fromthis webinar. Around 200 participants took part and received their participation certificates.
In India, the day 'December 22' is celebrated as the National Mathematics Day on the eve of the birthday of Dr.Srinivasa Ramanujan. It is in recognition of his contribution to the field of Mathematics. The Sigma Club of the Department of Mathematics celebrated this remarkable day on 16th December 2020. As part of celebrations, the department conducted a Webinar for the B.Sc I, II, and III year students. The Resource person was Dr. M.Mullai, Former Associate professor & Head, Department of Mathematics, Ethiraj College for women, Chennai. Professor’s lecture was on “Application of Mathematics”. She started the session by giving a simple example of how Mathematics is used in the form of a ratio to mix ingredients to prepare the sweet. In her lecture she explained and motivated the students by giving the importance of mathematics in various fields like Cryptography, Astronomy, Chemistry, Criminology, Medicine, Sports, Physics, etc…she also explained how mathematics is used in designing horoscope, coding, and decoding in cryptography.
