Industry 5.0 is the next phase of Industrial Revolution where people and machines work together harmoniously and  intelligently. It aims to reach beyond efficiency and productivity as the sole goal and reinforce the role and contribution of industry to society. To create awareness and make everyone understand its importance, an International Symposium on “Industry 5.O in the Society: Human Centric Solutions, Challenges and Prospective Research” was organised by the Department of B.Com(Corporate Secretaryship) on April 20, 2023 .The eminent persons who served as the resource persons are:

The Department Valedictory Ceremony was held on March 23, 2023. • To learn the concept of Indirect Tax and GST from the Pre-GST period to Post-GST Period.

• The students were able to learn about the skills required to start their own consultancy.

A programme on Practical Approaches on GST was organised for advanced learners by the department on March 08, 2023. The resource person for the programme was CMA Rakesh Shankar. Advanced learners from all the three years participated in this programme. He highlighted different tax slabs for collection of tax, highlights of GST Council Meeting. He also clearly explained the benefits of introducing single tax throughout the country.

Objective:

To mark the glorious event of India becoming a sovereign Republic.

Outcome:

The students were able to understand the value of uniqueness of different cultures and its positive contribution to the unity of the nation.

The 74th Republic Day was celebrated with patrotic fervour at our College on January 26, 2023. The Republic Day Celebrations began with Flag Hoisting by our Principal Dr. S Sridevi, followed by the Republic Day address. The cultural events were hosted by the Department of B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship) on the theme “Cultural Diversity of India”. To instill the significance of  glorious events of India becoming a sovereign Republic, various Inter-departmental Competitions were conducted for the students on  January 23,  2023. The students of B.Com (Corporate Secretaryship) staged a cultural show exhibiting the cultural diversity of India and the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

On campus Christmas celebrations was held on December 22, 2022. As part of the celebrations, a fun programme was arranged by students. Our students performed a dance and sang Christmas carols. The highlight of the celebration was the arrival of Santa. Students participated with great enthusiasm.

The educational tour taken to Mysore and Coorg provided a great opportunity to learn in an informal environment, thus building long-lasting relationships with friends and teachers.

As a class we started to Mysore on 15/10/2022 in Kaveri Express at 9:15 pm. The train reached Mysore at 7:15am on 16/10/2022. After reaching Mysore, we got into bus and reached Hotel (Place of stay). 16/10/2022, we were taken to Sri Chamundeshwari Temple, located on the top of Chamundi Hills, the fierce form of Shakti held in reverence for centuries by the Maharajas of Mysuru. Then students were taken to   Mysore Palace, a historical place known for its rich culture.

Next day we started to Coorg, and reached Palm valley Resort, after lunch we started to Irupur Falls, located in the midst of Brahmagiri Forest Range also a wildlife sanctuary and the falls, a breath taking sight to behold. 

The next day we visited Dubare Elephant camp, the camp is open for elephant interaction from 9 am to 11:30 am. This camp has plenty of trained elephants, we also participated in activities like feeding elephants, also watched how elephants were given a scrub–bath in the river. We enjoyed coracle boat ride on the river Kaveri.

Our next visit to the Namdroling monastery popularly referred to as ‘The Golden Temple’ is one of the largest Tibetan settlements, established in 1963. The main entrance has an attractive four-story tower with a wheel with symbols of Buddhism. The main attractions are statues of lord Buddha, one can pray, meditate, give offerings. Every wall of the temple is covered with vibrant traditional Tibetan paintings, explaining the Tibetan culture.

After visiting the golden temple, we moved to railway station, and got into Kaveri express ,reached Chennai next morning.

A Guest Lecture on “Corporate Governance and Ethics” was organized by the department for the final year students, on October 26, 2022 at 12.30 pm in JJK Auditorium.

The resource person explained how corporate governance as a system operating in business and how they are directed and controlled. He  stressed upon promoting fairness, transparency and accountability and how these elements help the company to distinguish themselves as these  elements are also required as it helps the corporate to complete at the international level, enabling the country’s progress to the next level. The speaker also explained the OECD principles, how these recommendations pave for good practice in corporate behaviour to re-build and maintain public trust in companies and stock market.

• To teach various dimensions of CSR and Major CSR initiatives taken by Indian Companies

Outcome:

• At the end of the lecture, students were able to understand the importance of CSR for various stakeholders and how it helped long-term sustainability and success of business firms.

A Guest Lecture on “Corporate Social Responsibility” was organized by the department for the final year students, on October 27, 2022 at 12.30 pm in JJK Auditorium.

The resource person for the lecture was CS Santhanagopalan. J, a practising Company Secretary. He introduced the concept of CSR with its evolution in its legal and ethical perspectives. The various legal provisions of CSR were clearly discussed with sections. Later, he unravelled the different dimensions of CSR and its impact on business. The second part of the session was focused on the case studies related to major CSR activities undertaken by our Indian Companies like Infosys, TCS, HDFC, etc. These companies’ CSR Report and CSR Policy were shown and explained to the students directly from the respective company’s websites.

• To give an overview of the functioning of the RTI Act, 2005

• To teach students about the procedure for applying for seeking any information

Outcomes:

At the end of the webinar students were able to,

• understand the history of RTI Act 

• learnt how the act ensures transparency of information to reduce corruption and make every public authority accountable

• Know what sort of information to seek and not to seek from the public authority.

The Department of B. Com (CS) conducted a webinar on “Right to Information Act, 2005” to re-inforce the subject knowledge on Business Laws for the final year students, on September 24, 2022. The session was held through online mode in Google Meet platform at 10.30 am. The Guest speaker for the webinar was CS Nethra Jayasankaran, Partner, DB Law Chambers, LLP. The webinar gave a complete picture about the RTI Act, 2005, i.e., from the establishment, objectives, role and responsibility of CAPIO/APIO till the penalties. The resource person asserted that RTI Act through its transparency empowers the citizens to question the functioning of public/government officials but also contain the corruption at all levels. A demo was shown in the middle of the session for who, how and where to file RTI. The online portal for making RTI application was also projected. The question and answer part post the presentation enabled the students to get clarity in RTI Act.

Theoretical knowledge is not enough for making a good professional career, with an aim to go beyond academics an industrial visit was arranged for I B.Com (CS) students. On 27-8-2022, students visited Trident Coating Pvt. Ltd., Vandalur, Chennai.  Students were briefed about how the industry works and the different ways in which the spare parts paint coating are done.

• Developed confidence, creativity, problem solving skills and team spirit 

The Department of B.Com(CS) conducted inter-school competitions with the theme ‘Independence and Freedom Struggle’ on 17-8-2022 , where the students of different schools enthusiastically competed with each other.  Dr. P.J .Queency Asha Dhas welcomed the gathering and Dr. Mercy Silvester offered felicitations. The chief guest for the event was Mrs. Beena Thomas, Associate Professor &Head,  PG & Research Department of English. She addressed the students on the topic: ‘Better Version of Yourself’.

On-stage events like Quiz, Dumb charades, Connexion, Just a minute and  Off-stage events like Cooking without fire, Painting without brush, Wealth out of waste, Soap carving were conducted. On the whole 415 Students from 19 schools   participated in these competitions. The overall championship was bagged by St. Thomas Group of Schools, Madhavaram Milk Colony.

It’s a motivational movie which inspired the students to achieve their goals despite the socio-economic challenges. 300 students watched the movie in a convival atmosphere.

To keep college students away from drugs Hon’ble Chief Minister launched a state level programme ‘Drive Against Drugs’ (DAD). As per the Government instruction, Department of B.Com. (CS) conducted a week long programme from 11-8-2022 to 17-8-2022 focusing on creating sensitization on Drugs and Anti Drugs Awareness. The following competitions were conducted

Department of B.Com (CS) conducted Personal Grooming session for the II & III year students on July 14, 2022. The session was conducted by our Alumna Mrs. S. Saira Banu. She conducted one-on-one session and it was very useful to the students with low self-esteem and jobs seekers. She made a presentation on types of skin, benefits of facial, pedicure, manicure and gave a demonstration of makeup, hairdo and saree draping.

As a part of outreach programme Department of B. Com (CS) collaborated with THUVAKKAM,  in conducting track and field Athletic Championship - 2022 on July  09,  2022. Our students volunteered for conducting the track and field events for kids at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai. 12 Student volunteers participated in this program and received the Certificate.
