The Building and Civil Construction (BCC) course of studies is designed to create an appreciation of
the industry and to develop entry-level skills within the Residential, Commercial and Civil
Construction trades. Opportunities to develop skills for personal use and to make a successful
transition from school to the workplace or post-secondary institutions will be presented to students
enrolled in this course. Practical experience will be gained within the school, through outside
production experience, and through optional Work Based Learning.
As a result of education in the BCC Program grades 9-12 Students will:
● Demonstrate safe work habits associated with hand and portable power tools, SDS, Lock-Out /
Tag-Out, electrical hazards, trenching, personal fall arrest systems, ladders, and scaffolding.
● Demonstrate knowledge of different building materials and fasteners.
● Demonstrate site and grade layout using a variety of methods.
● Demonstrate floor, wall, roof, and stair construction (residential and commercial).
● Demonstrate the installation of exterior finishes, such as trim, roofing and siding.
● Demonstrate the installation of interior finishes, such as drywall, suspended ceilings, door
hardware, etc.
● Comprehend basic building codes including planning and zoning regulations.
● Demonstrator the Installation of concrete reinforcing materials.
● Erecting concrete forms and pouring concrete.
● Demonstrate an awareness of structural steel applications.
● Demonstrate basic metal cutting and welding skills.
