Rules based on the Conemaugh Township Elementary School Rules
Policy sign off sheet is sent home at the beginning of the school year.
* Homework Policy:
· Homework will be based on the material introduced and taught by the teacher. Students will have an opportunity for guided practice that relates to the assignments given and will be provide assistance if needed. Work not completed in class becomes homework.
· Homework is not busy work. It is assigned to reinforce skills taught during the instructional day. It is important for your child to complete his/her assignments so that they can master each skill taught.
· Parents are welcome and encouraged to give help on homework. It is best to help only when the child does not completely understand the concept. After you explain, expect your child to continue on his/her own.
· Incomplete homework will be completed in Work Room. Incomplete homework also results in a one-point penalty. Please check PowerSchool to keep abreast of your child’s progress in regards to homework. We will notify you in the event that incomplete homework is a reoccurring issue by phone, email or a note.
* Make-up Work Policy:
When absent, your child has the number of days that he/she was absent to make up the missed assignments and tests. In the event a test is not made up within that time period, a 0 will be given. Please email all 5th grade teachers in the morning if your child is going to be absent if you would like work sent to the office for pickup or be sent home with a sibling. If your child is going to miss school for a vacation, please let us know ahead of time and we can send home work prior to the absence.
*Writing Projects Policy:
Students will be working on various writing projects throughout the course of the year. During instruction students will learn various grammar and writing skills that will be assessed in the final writing piece. This is an assessment, therefore, parents are asked not to help students revise or edit their papers during any phase of the writing process. In the event that a writing assessment is compromised, the student will be required to rewrite the piece or be given a zero.
* Accelerated Reader Policy:
Students will be given an AR reading goal each marking period that will be reflected as a 10 point grade for their reading grade each nine weeks. Students are to be reading hardback reader stories and chapter books to achieve their independent 10 point AR goal. Students can achieve more than the 10 AR points to earn prizes at the Awards Ceremony. No AR article quizzes will be accepted. Book reading levels will be posted each nine weeks and students should be reading at OR above that level based on the STAR Reading Test. AR Book tests taken below the marking period benchmark will not count. Please refer to the AR contract each nine weeks for more information. AR Reading can take place at school and home, but only AR tests can be taken at school.
* IXL Policy:
IXL is an online program that will be assigned in Reading, ELA, and Math each week. The weekly assignments are due on Friday of each week by 4:00 PM, unless otherwise specified. Each assignment is worth 5 points and is given a grade based on the child’s percentage earned on that assignment. The IXL assignments are on skills that are review or learned in class in a computer type format. This will be helpful for the online PSSA tests in the spring. Students are encouraged to watch a lesson video, if applicable, prior to answering questions to review the skill. The IXL program has your child practice the skills starting at a Level 1 and moving up to a Level 4 where your child will earn 100%. IXL assignments can be completed in school and at home. Workroom will be assigned if your child is not completing the assignments.
