Bachelor’s Degree (Ed Code §44266)
Persons admitted to programs must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is an admissions requirement (See the link, Click Admission Requirements).
2. Program Curriculum
A college or university that operates a program of professional preparation shall have a curriculum that meets the appropriate requirement as follows: A program of study for the school counselor specialization shall be: Equivalent to a minimum of 48 semester units or 72 quarter units; or 720 classroom hours of post-baccalaureate study.
The School Counseling specialization is a concentration within the Master’s of Science degree in the Department of Educational Psychology. The School Counseling Specialization is a 2-year full-time or 3-year 60 semester unit program. The program starts in the summer. Students are given the option to complete the MFT concentration by performing 225 additional fieldwork hours, while completing the same set of units (60 semester units) that qualify for the completion of the Master’s degree in Counseling.
3. For Intern Programs
An entity that operates an approved program of preparation for a PPS credential with an Intern option shall require each candidate who is admitted into the Intern Program to have completed sufficient coursework so that the candidate is ready for supervised practice in the schools. The Intern must be supervised and supported by both the employer and the Commission-approved program.
The internship is also labeled as “Advanced Practicum” EPSY 696 (taken in the Fall and Spring) in the School Counseling PPS program. It is a supervised experience that occurs in the second year of the cohorted program.

The School Psychology specialization is a concentration within the Master’s of Science degree in the Department of Educational Psychology. The School Psychology Specialization is a 3-year full-time 95 semester unit program. The program starts in the summer. The internship begins in the third year.
3. For Intern Programs
An entity that operates an approved program of preparation for a PPS credential with an Intern option shall require each candidate who is admitted into the Intern Program to have completed sufficient coursework so that the candidate is ready for supervised practice in the schools. The Intern must be supervised and supported by both the employer and the Commission-approved program.
The intern program starts in the third year of the School Psychology program (see handbook). Candidates are placed in a school site, usually employed by a school district or LEA, and are supervised by a qualified School Psychologist. Candidates complete 20 units during the third and final year of supervised internship experience and a capstone project to complete the California Commission-approved professional preparation program specializing in school psychology.
