Participants in this workshop will explore a variety of ways that upper elementary and middle school students can use coding for creative expression across all content areas. We will focus on the integration of computational thinking, computer science and the maker mindset into existing curriculum and standards. We will also share various example projects, lesson plans, how-to guides and additional resources. Each day of the workshop will be hands-on with learner choice and differentiation so that participants can come to the experience at any level. The first day of the workshop will be Creative Coding with Scratch followed by a day of digital making and physical computing with the introduction of technologies such as Makey Makey boards (and others) to incorporate coding into the physical world. The workshop will close out on the final day with a Hack-a-thon, where participants will work in teams to build a larger project and experience the design process first hand. At the end of the workshop there will be time for planning for implementation within participant’s own classroom, building or district. We look forward to sharing a creative, collaborative and inspiring three day workshop with participants!
