NUR 417 - Nursing Care of Adult II
This presentation covers the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and highlights how adhering to EMTALA advocates for patients on an ethical, legal, and social level. The purpose of EMTALA protects an individual's right to safe, comprehensive emergency care regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. This presentation outlines how nurses can inform patients of their rights, while advocating for them in their practice.
Assignment: Special Considerations in Emergency Care (EMTALA Presentation)
How did your diversity self-assessment and your exploration of your own personal biases affect your educational opportunity that you created for the ER nurse?
The diversity self-assessment was full of great questions I have never considered. It was a good reminder of how important self-reflection is and how we must periodically check in with ourselves. This assessment inspired me to focus my educational opportunity on EMTALA because of how houseless individuals are viewed and talked about in the emergency department. Several negative stereotypes are commonly associated with this population in emergency medicine, so I wanted to use PSLO to highlight how and why EMTALA came to be and how we must advocate for it.Â
What significant revelation or learning pearl did you experience as you completed this project?
Having never worked in a time without EMTALA, it is hard to imagine turning people away because of their inability to pay. That seems so contradictory to our purpose have healthcare professionals. EMTALA ensures money is not a barrier to emergency care and hospital interests are not prioritized over patient's health.
