What is Coding?

Coding, or computer programming, is giving a computer step-by-step commands to tell it what to do.

Why teach coding?

Students who have mastered coding can construct, hypothesise, explore, experiment, evaluate, and draw conclusions.

Coding is an important and necessary future-focused literacy. It is included as part of the school curricula in many countries who recognise this.

Five reasons to teach coding

Coding is for all students
Coding allows collaboration and communication amongst peers creating a culture of learning
Coding can improve the brains ability to make changes and strengthen connections
Coding strengthens Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) proficiencies
Coding promotes problem solving, and important and necessary future-focused skill.

Scratch Junior

ScratchJr is an introductory programming language that enables young children (ages 5-7) to create their own interactive stories and games. Children snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Children can modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, even insert photos of themselves -- then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life.
