Happy Anniversary Gallaudet University

April 8, 1864

The campus was founded on land donated by Amos Kendall in 1856 and opened the following year with 12 Deaf students and 6 Blind students. Edward Miner Gallaudet (Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's son) was the first superintendent. At that time it was called the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf (& Dumb) and Blind.

APRIL 8, 1864 Congress authorized the institution to confer college degrees.

President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill into law. Gallaudet was made president of the institution and college.
