Meet the Directors

Joshua Hahn

This is my 3rd year at Prairie HS as Co-Director of Bands.  Previously, I held the position of Head Director of Bands at Clinton High School in Clinton, IA for 13 years.  I was also the 5-12 band director for 6 years in the small farming community of Orion (IL) Community School District just outside of the Quad Cities in Illinois.

I have a Bachelors degree in Music Education from Western Illinois University and a Masters degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois.  I have toured Europe twice as brass staff with the Illinois Ambassadors of Music.  I have been active on trumpet with the Josh Duffee Orchestra, a 1920’s hot jazz ensemble based out of the Quad Cities.  I also performed with the funk group 10 of Soul based out of the Quad Cities for 3 years.  I have either played trumpet or conducted a total of 13 different Musical productions with the Quad Cities Musical Guild between 2003-2010.  I’ve also played trumpet for the Quad City Wind Ensemble and the Clinton Symphony.

I have a fantastic family that I am excited for you to meet.  My wife Stefanie is currently a 3rd grade teacher at Prairie Heights Elementary.  We have a son, Aden, who is currently in 11th grade at Prairie (GO HAWKS!) and is a part of the Prairie HS Band Program!  Aden is a Percussionist, runs track for Prairie HS, and plays on the PSC traveling team in the fallOur daughter, Greenley, is in 6th grade this year at the new Creek.  She absolutely loves participating in competitive dance at Dancer's Edge and singing at home with her Karaoke machine.  She also plays the flute in the 6th grade band at Creek.  I am currently teaching her to play piano at home.

We are excited to introduce you to some of the most rewarding experiences band at PHS can have!

Dear Prairie Band Students & Parents,

It is my pleasure to be coming back “home,” and I am looking forward to meeting all of you and getting started! I say coming back home because I am a 2001 graduate of Prairie High School. After that, I went to the University of Northern Iowa and graduated in 2005 with a B.M. in Music Education with trumpet emphasis. My first teaching job was at North-Linn Community Schools from 2006-2010. I’ve been teaching at Xavier High School from 2010 until now and in the midst of that time, received my M.M. in conducting and music education from Kansas State University in 2015.

So, I’ve been in the Cedar Rapids community for most of my life. I have a lot of passions outside of teaching including playing tennis, traveling and I spend a lot of time playing trumpet with various groups. I help to run and play trumpet in the Iowa Women’s Jazz Orchestra – please check us out when you can! Again, I’m very much looking forward to getting started.

Have a great summer and I’ll see you soon!
