Immersion in the week-long Inquiry Institue this summer reinforced my inquiry teaching skills developed by years of association with Rice Office of STEM Engagement. This school year my department and I shifted several labs from the standard cookbook scriped procedure to a more guided inquiry approach. In addition, I dedicated extra time for students to answer free reponse style questions in order to increase their overall scientific literacy and also to improve their performance on standardized testing.
