Homework for Language Arts 1 will help extend skills learned during class. Students will never receive busy work from me for homework; I'd rather them have time to spend with you as a family or read a book.
Most of the time, homework will involve videos previewing the next lesson's focus, long-term activities such as Achieve 3000, the Article of the Week assignment, revising essays, and redoing assignments as needed. In addition, students will need to complete assignments at home if they are not finished during class. For example, students who need extra time to complete the introductory paragraph for an essay we worked on in class will be asked to complete the task at home.
Life happens and we can’t always meet deadlines. Just like people get a grace period when missing a loan payment, students get one for missing assignment deadlines. Furthermore, I want to ensure kids learn and master necessary skills. Completing the work so I can provide accurate feedback is essential to achieving that goal.
With that said, waiting to turn in a bunch of work at the end of a marking period is not an option. Learning and mastering a marking period's worth of skills in one week is simply not feasible.
Work will be accepted according to the following guidelines:
Late work submitted within one week will be accepted without penalty.
Late work submitted after one week and before two weeks will be accepted with a ten percent penalty.
Late work submitted after two weeks but before three weeks will be accepted with a 20 percent penalty.
Any “supportive assignments “ not completed within three weeks of the due date will NOT be accepted. At that point, students have chosen not to complete it; a permanent zero will remain in the gradebook. Once an assignment reaches this point, "redos" are not an option.
Additional information on late work:
Students may need to have a parent/guardian sign a form indicating they are aware that you are turning in an assignment late along with a reason.
On the form, the student must reflect on why the assignment is late.
When turning in the third late assignment in a marking period, the student must explain how he/she will work to improve their ability to complete work on time.
*The only exception will be assignments that count for a significant grade (summative projects or essays). However, a final date to submit those assignments will still be given.
