Grading will utilize the Cumberland Regional High School English Department official grading breakdown. Grading is broken down as follows:
45 % = Summative Assignments: These include items such as tests, final drafts of essays, and projects.
25 % = Formative Assignments: These include items such as quizzes, monthly Achieve 3000 requirements, select CommonLit assignments, larger class and homework assignments (e.g., open-ended responses).
30 % - Supportive Assignments: These include items such as classwork assignments, homework assignments, Do Nows/focus activities, monthly benchmark assessments, No Red Ink modules, and participation.
If you have any questions, please talk to me or email me at ward@crhsd.org.
Extra credit is not offered. Student grades are designed to match skill mastery. However, students are not "stuck with a grade." They may redo MOST assignments that were initially completed. Please see below for more details.
*Exceptions include monthly Achieve requirements, class warm-ups (daily writing/journal entries via NoRedInk), and any timed assignments such as Benchmarks and timed writing drafts. Failure to do these in the time given results in a 0.
Students may redo MOST assignments at any time for better grades provided they originally completed the assignment before assignments are no longer accepted. (Please see late work policy for more information.) They should review any feedback included with the returned assignment and use that to improve. I teach for mastery of skills and want students to do their best, whether that occurs on attempt one or attempt six. The cut off for redos will typically be two weeks before the end of the marking period for older assignments. Students who wish to redo work must talk with me and may need to complete a form indicating what their plan is to prepare differently, or revise the assignment. For writing tasks, students may be asked to write an explanation of what they did differently, what was changed, and why. The goal is to make sure students reflect upon their previous performance and learn how they can improve at a particular skill.
