The Cleveland Guardians beat the Texas Rangers on Saturday, September 27th to clinch a playoff spot. Cantillo started on the mound for the Guardians, while Latz started for the Rangers. During the first couple innings, Cantillo was off to a hot start, delivering a good amount of strikes. The Guardians’ defense was looking pretty solid, but both teams had some errors. During the final innings of the game, the Guardians were having some trouble putting the bat on the ball, but in the bottom of the 9th, the pitcher hit C.J. Kayfus with a pitch that walked in one more run that they desperately needed to win the game. The Guardians won 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning at their home turf Progressive Field, where a walkoff run secured the win. The Guardians celebrated afterwards, watching some amazing fireworks on the field. The victory marked a very important moment in their season.
This 2025 season, the 125th season for the franchise, was insane. According to Wikipedia, “on July 6th, they were 15.5 games back of the first place Detroit Tigers and were as many as 11 games back on September 4th.” The Guardians pushed forward “while the Tigers collapsed and took the American League Central lead on September 23” on the Tigers. The Guardians had trailed Detroit by 15.5 games, which made this rank “the largest divisional comeback in MLB history.” With the win against the Texas Rangers on September 27th, the Guardians took “the sixth and final postseason spot in the American League… [and] clinched the American League division for the second consecutive time and the sixth time in ten years.”
