New Bern High School offers Beginning, Intermediate, Proficient, and Advanced Visual Arts courses. Beginning Visual Arts must be taken prior to signing up for any other art course at the school.Â
Visual Arts I
In this course, you will explore a variety of media at your own level through several different art units. Methods covered could include drawing, painting, printmaking, fiber art, collage, ceramics, and more. Additionally, you will learn about the elements and principles of design and practice conveying how they are used in art through written reflections and critiques.Â
Materials needed: sketchbook, pencil
Visual Arts II
In this course, you will continue to explore a variety of media at your own level, building on your VA1 course knowledge as well as learning processes for new media. In addition to 2D art, you will have the opportunity to further explore 3D art. Visual Arts I (Beginning) is a prerequisite for Visual Arts II.
Materials needed: sketchbook, pencil
Visual Arts III
In this course, you will explore art media based on assigned themes, assessing your own art-making processes throughout the semester. You will complete written reflections focused on how you practiced, experimented, and revised your art to an accomplished level, aiming to create at least six major artworks during the semester. Visual Arts II (Intermediate) is a prerequisite for Visual Arts III. This is an Honors level course.

Visual Arts IV
In this course, you will select your own semester-long theme upon which to base your work. You will assess your own art-making process and complete written reflections focused on how you practiced, experimented, and revised your art to an accomplished level. The goal for this level is to create at least five fully developed artworks. Visual Arts III (Proficient) is a prerequisite for Visual Arts IV. This is an Honors level course.
