Welcome to Ms. Tarlton's Art Class at NBHS
The goal of art education is to foster creative expression, critical thinking, and visual literacy in students by engaging them with various artistic techniques, materials, and publications. Through hands-on projects and written reflections, students can develop the skills to communicate their ideas, develop their personal voice, and appreciate diverse artistic traditions and perspectives. Art education also cultivates problem-solving skills, self-confidence, and an understanding of how art influences and reflects culture and society, preparing students for both creative careers and a more thoughtful engagement with the world around them.

I am one of two visual art teachers at New Bern High School. I grew up in Aiken County, South Carolina, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts at University of South Carolina Aiken. I then attended Lander University in Greenwood, SC to complete my Master of Arts in Teaching. My teaching career began at Swansboro Middle School before moving back home to Aiken to teach for a few years. I returned to North Carolina to teach in Wake County before coming to Craven County Schools and teaching at Havelock Middle. I am very excited to finally be teaching high school art! In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, bird-watching, vacations, keeping plants mostly alive, and art-making. Fiber art is the area in which I have become most comfortable, though my art interests are expansive. As an art teacher, I constantly dabble in a variety of media and often use my artistic trials as interior decor. My boyfriend and I have a dachshund mix, a tortoiseshell cat, and a lot of plants!
