2018 - 2019 - Sustainable Development Goal #3 - Health and Wellness
During the 18-19 school year, Gowan Gators collaborated with community members, outside or inside our school, to promote health and wellness. This theme shows our commitment to the idea that healthy minds and bodies are a precursor to the education we provide. We focuesd on this standard and asked ourselves what we could do to make our commity a healthier, happier, fitter place.
Problem:
Any lack of wellness at our school and in our community prevents success. How do we help ensure the health and wellness of all Gators and Yumans?
Solutions:
K-1 - focused on healthy environments
3-4 - focused on mental health and kindness
5 -6 - focused on community partnerships & community problem solving
What a better way to spread kindness than with sweet 5 year olds visiting an assisted living facility to spread holiday cheer. Kinders focus on combating loneliness in all ages.
First graders learned that pets have a positive effect on health and wellness. Spending time with furry family members has proven health benefits and by partnering with our local humane society and other pet organizations first graders encouraged these bonds.
Second grade partnered with 5th grade to research and write about health and wellness. First quarter they researched national parks and wrote about how these parks improve the physical and mental health and wellness of their visitors. Second quarter they researched preventative wellness and created alphabet books of healthy choices.
Kindness, respect, and bully prevention are essential for a healthy community. Third grade has studied the physical and emotional benefits of kindness and participated in random acts of kindness for their class and school community.
Mental health and wellness is an important part of general health an wellness and especially for our vulnerable elderly population. Our community has a large population elderly of "snowbirds". Many of them struggle with loneliness and depression as friends and family pass away or when they are left in nursing homes. Fourth grade learned the importance of giving time and service by creating a variety of gift projects and partnering with local facilities to make sure our older community is not alone.
After introducing SDG 3 and what it means on global scale. Fifth grade started by having students develop a list of problems that prevent all community members from achieving health and wellness. From there they learned about activism and worked as a whole class to make public service announcements about health in heat. Students then divided into small groups to study, advocate about and solve a community problem related to wellness of their choosing.
Sixth grade if focusing on documenting stories of our older generations. On Grandparents' Day, they invited grandparents in to be interviewed by students to share their life stories.
2017 - 2018 Inaugural Year - Sustainable Development Goal 12 - WASTE REDUCTION
During the 17-18 school year, Gowan Gators collaborated with community members, outside or inside our school, to reduce waste. We learned that tackling community projects can be a HUGE undertaking, but with a theme to unite all of our projects, our student and community member collaboration, group planning, and specific events were all tied to a central idea. Our theme, allowed us as a school community to work together on a common goal, while enabling ALL of our gators to be involved in problem-solving within real-world applications. It was an adventure to work through this process and question what these projects could become. We learned through planning, collaboration, trial & error, redesign and pushed the boundaries of what we believed community projects should be.
Problem:
Waste occurs at our school and in our community. How do we reduce the amount of waste in our classrooms, cafeteria, and in our community?
Solutions:
K-1 - focused on classroom/school waste
3-4 - focused on cafeteria waste
5 -6 - focused on community partnerships & community waste.
