Opening Day: A Baseball Tradition

The scents of freshly cut grass and roasted peanuts. Sounds of a roaring crowd, the crack of the bat, and the pop of a glove. The traditional singing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”. This means it’s baseball season, and every year starts off with Opening Day. Opening Day has been celebrated ever since the start of professional play in the National League in 1876, a mere nine years after the Cincinnati Red Stockings, now known as the Reds, were formed. The start of a new baseball season brings the thoughts of summer, alongside a vibe of patriotism.

This season was unique for Opening Day, as the inaugural game of the 2019 MLB season took place in Tokyo, Japan at the Tokyo Dome, rather than being held in America. The series featured two games that would showcase the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics. The inaugural series also provided the last games for Ichiro Suzuki, a highly respected player known all over the world. He would retire after the second game at the Tokyo Dome.

Opening Day in America was held on March 28, 2019. Opening Day usually sees action between all 30 Major League Baseball teams, as it allows baseball fanatics to finally sit back and not stress about life without Major League Baseball. This year’s Opening Day provided many critical moments, with the greatest moment coming from Lorenzo Cain of the Milwaukee Brewers. With the Brewers up 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th, Jose Martinez blasted a ball towards right field, but Lorenzo Cain gracefully leaped into the air, catching the ball! Cain saved the game, allowing Milwaukee to win with a final score of 5-4. Two of the biggest names of the offseason, Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, made their debuts for their new teams, which is exciting for Phillies and Padres fans. All Opening Day scores will be posted down below, so you can check if your favorite team won or lost.

Overall, Opening Day was filled with fun and excitement for both players and fans. Although your favorite team may not have won, Opening Day still resurrected the great game of baseball, which laid dormant since October. I hope everyone’s favorite team plays their hardest and to their heart’s desires. Best of luck to all this season!
