ROBOTICS

Quick Message

The VEX Robotics Competition IQ program is designed to expose students to STEM-based experiences and opportunities through in-person instruction and activities in the classroom. This program extends from the elementary up through 8th grade. Whether students have had previous experiences with VEX IQ or not, all 8th grade students share the opportunity to learn about this platform in depth as part of the Intro to Engineering and Technology class offered at Cranberry Jr/Sr High School.

BEST Robotics is a national robotics competition where students have six weeks to design and build a robot that can perform specific tasks within three minutes. Each year students research an industry theme and develop a marketing presentation and trade booth to accompany their functional robot. This experience not only develops programming, science, and engineering skills, but also enriches those students who are interested in business and creative studies. BEST takes place during the first 6 weeks of the school year and is open to all 9th -12th grade students and highly motivated junior high students by invitation.

The highschool VRC program builds upon where students left off in the VEX IQ program. Students continue to hone their coding, teamwork, and engineering related skills with a new and more complex platform. In this program students work with constructing larger robots with a greater level of freedom of manipulation and modification of materials. They also will experience creating longer and more complex autonomous programs with additional sensors that are not used in the IQ platform. More veteran students will likely transition to text-based coding and experiment with more complex subsystems and gain access to pneumatic components. Students can take the class (Intro to Robotics) once, but can be involved in the program from grades 9-12. More veteran students will likely transition to text-based coding and experiment with more complex subsystems.
