Something for Everyone: Clubs Thrive at Cranberry
Written by Audrina Peterson | September 19, 2025
Cranberry Area High School offers new clubs for students to take part in every other Wednesday. These clubs give students opportunities to connect with peers who share similar interests while exploring new hobbies and skills.
One example is the Book Club, which provides a very welcoming space for students who enjoy reading. Advisor Lori Corbett said, “Reading takes you to a whole different world, so you can experience so much from reading it just opens up a whole different world.”
The Science Club offers hands-on experiences for students interested in exploring the outdoors and scientific topics. Activities include field trips to the Carnegie Science Center, Earth Week projects, and road-side clean up events. Advisor Lauri Piercy said, “I just love science, and I like to give any student who likes science a chance to do fun things with it.”
Students interested in technology and engineering can join the Vex Robotics club, open to grades 7-12. In addition to building robots, members practice problem-solving skills. “You can build critical thinking skills,”said advisor Zachery Bedee.
Students seeking a calmer, more relaxed activity, the Chess Club is a great option. It is open to students in grades 7-12. This club meets in the Library. This club will be held in the library with the new Librarian Justine Zuchowski.
Students who are more creative can join the Drama Club. Open to grades 7-12, the club focuses on building enthusiasm in performance and theater. “ I think it's getting the students excited about the drama club and having really active officers and people who are genuinely in love with theater and sharing that excitement with others,” said advisor Janene Michael.
Another option is the Ignite club, a student-led faith-based group open to all students in grades 7-12. Advisor Trisha Dixon expressed appreciation for the opportunity it provides, stating, “I feel grateful that we have a school district allowing us to meet and giving students the chance to exercise their faith.”
CRANA (Cranberry Advocates for Nutrition & Activity) is a club designed to promote healthy behavior and is open to students in grades 7th-9th. Advisor Melanie Oliver highlighted the benefits of being involved: “Participating in Clubs in general is so beneficial to a student...it builds relationships and builds character. CRANA allows students to be a part of events that make a positive impact on our school.”
Students shared mixed but generally positive opinions about the available clubs.
Adam Cross, a senior, said, “It gives you an opportunity to do the things you enjoy during the school day.”
Additional clubs may be introduced if students present thoughtful proposals that outline their idea, its purpose, and a plan for organization.
Overall, there is a wide range of clubs at Cranberry High School for students in grades 7-12, with no requirements for joining. These opportunities create connection and personal growth within the school community.
