SENECA, Pa, March 27, 2025 - Cranberry High School students took part in a unique entrepreneurial experience on March 25th, when they presented their original business ideas in a “Shark Tank” style event organized by 12th-grade English teacher Heather Motter. The event allowed students to showcase their creativity, entrepreneurial skills, and passion for business in front of a panel of local business owners and professionals.
Inspired by the popular TV show Shark Tank, Motter encouraged her students to create their own business, or product, and pitch it to a group of respected local business leaders.
“I wanted to inspire my students to think creatively and bring their ideas to life. It’s a great opportunity to involve the community in the classroom and help students develop real-world skills,” said Motter.
The panel of “Sharks” included five prominent local professionals: Ann Richer, CPA at Richer Trinch and Co.; Kate Whitling, Vice President of Schake Industries; Susan Williams, President of the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce; Jon Burnstein, Head of Wildcat Mansion; and Devin Zagar, President of FLEX (Future Leaders and Entrepreneurs Exchange) and Owner of 7 Foot Productions and Marketing.
Working in groups of up to three, students developed their own companies, including designing logos, creating products, crafting slogans, identifying target audiences, and setting reasonable prices. Some of the innovative ideas presented included "SmartScope," an all-in-one hunter tool for range finding, and "Chill-vault," a company that recycles used fire extinguishers into coolers. Additionally, some students pitched service-based businesses, such as "All About Detailing," a mobile detailing service they plan to start locally.
One standout entrepreneur was senior Olivia Rossman, who already owns a mobile spray tanning business. “It’s great to see so many of my peers with entrepreneurial ideas that could truly turn into businesses,” she said.
The panel of judges was impressed by the creativity and drive of the students. “I think all of the ideas were fantastic, and it’s amazing to see so many students already running their own businesses,” commented Kate Whitling.
Ann Richer, a local CPA, expressed her enthusiasm for the mobile car wash idea, calling it “the most viable,” and saying it could do well in the area.
The “Sharks” also appreciated the opportunity to connect with young entrepreneurs and offer guidance. Susan Williams, President of the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of such events in building connections with the next generation of business leaders: “Sometimes it’s hard to know how we can engage with young people in the community. This event was a great way for us to connect with them in a comfortable and meaningful setting.”
Students were encouraged to partner with local businesses to further develop their ideas and gain valuable insights.
“Every single one of these students could benefit from introductions to local businesses, resources, and mentors who can help bring their ideas to life,” Williams said.
Devin Zagar, who is involved with FLEX, added, “I would encourage these students to connect with more young professionals who share similar goals and aspirations.”
The event provided students with not only a chance to explore their entrepreneurial potential but also an opportunity to learn about the many possibilities a career in business could offer.
“There are so many opportunities out there,” said Zagar. “This event is just the beginning for these students, and I’m excited to see where they go from here.”
The entrepreneurial event at Cranberry High School was an exciting and valuable experience for both students and the community, fostering connections, innovation, and a new generation of potential business leaders.
