Why is Society Easily Offended?

Is the world becoming too sensitive?

The Pew Research Center released data in July of 2016 saying 59% of Americans think too many people are easily offended by language these days and 39% of people think we need to be more careful with language to avoid offending people.

However I believe the debate on “political correctness” goes far beyond language usage. When it comes down to it, has society become too sensitive? As always, there are two sides to this argument. So here’s mine:

This is solely my opinion and of course you are entitled to your opinion as well. To start, I want to say that I DO NOT condone the excessive homophobia, racism, and sexism that occurs in society. However, I feel as though we have become so overly sensitive and easily offended, probably caused by the political climate we are in, that we have to tiptoe around everything.

Most people are so wrapped up in being offended by words, that conversations never really get anywhere. I fully understand that words are powerful weapons, but only focusing on terminology stops any actual action from taking place. For example, we could spend our time arguing about the “politically correct” way to refer to homeless people or we could spend that time volunteering to help them.

I also find it hypocritical of those who preach the first amendment and freedom of speech, yet are so quick to judge the point of view or opinions that are not cohesive with their own. The partisan social climate is definitely affecting the way we communicate. No one seems to listen to anyone from the opposing side. But here’s a thought, what if instead of reeling with extreme offense, why do we not kindly and openly talk about it?

Thanks to social media it is much easier for people to have a voice. I believe it is a good thing to stand up for what you believe. However, do not simply claim that you are offended and argue until you get what you want. I think if you become offended, it is important to utilize that moment to communicate and educate. Explain the issue so others can understand, speak about your feelings with an open mind, and be more thoughtful of their opinions.

Again, these are just my thoughts. What are yours? I would love to open and honestly discuss!
