Photography Workshop

This past Tuesday, Rich Sayer of The Derrick came to Cranberry High School to hold a photography workshop with journalism students, as well as students involved with the yearbook. 

Sayer, who’s been working as a photojournalist for over twenty years, began the workshop by showing a photo he had recently taken which some may consider controversial. He said that his reasoning for taking the photo, and many others similar to it, was that he wanted to better understand what was happening and who we are as a culture.

Sayer stated, “As a journalist, sometimes we have to approach these things to get a better understanding of who we are as people.”

Students then had the opportunity to ask questions about photojournalism. One of his responses was, “You need to find what the story is, and take a photo that includes layers of information that best help you to tell that story.”

The workshop came to a close shortly before the school day ended, in which the students left with fresh, new ideas, and a better understanding of photojournalism.
