Homecoming Change Brings Separate Celebrations for Cranberry and Oil City
Written by Bradley Smith| 9/19/25
With homecoming season fast approaching, Cranberry and Oil City School Districts have made the decision to separate their homecoming dances, allowing each school to host its own celebration for the 2025–26 school year.
In past years, homecoming events were combined between the two schools, with Cranberry and Oil City alternating as hosts.
“Homecoming has been together for, I think, six to eight years, but I’m not exactly sure,” said Mrs. Loll.
According to Mrs. Loll, the decision was made collaboratively by both schools, with safety being a major factor. “We actually sent out a Google Form to students in grades 9–12 about this decision,” she said. “Good communication was established between me, Oil City’s principal, and the superintendents.”
While the change means separate dances, some traditions will remain shared. “Safety was the biggest concern, but we are still doing the parade and the game together, and both schools will still have separate courts,” Mrs. Loll explained. “It’s just the dance that will be different. This change is going to be difficult for our students.”
Mrs. Loll also noted possible benefits of the new arrangement. “Our students will now have two homecomings if their date goes to Oil City. Another benefit is that it brings homecoming back to Cranberry in terms of safety for our students,” she said. “There is no telling what the future holds for homecoming, but I’m hoping to see an amazing dance and that everyone has a great time.”
Students shared mixed reactions to the change.
“It really wouldn’t change for me. I’ll just ask my friends where we’re going and go with them,” said John Milliron. “Depending on if I have a group to go with determines whether I go or not.”
Jayden Shumaker expressed surprise at the shift. “It’s a sudden change. It’s been a tradition for the schools for as long as I can remember,” he said.
Jadyn Shumaker pointed out potential drawbacks. “It’s going to be more planning, bigger expenses, and two sets of tickets,” she said.
Cranberry’s Homecoming dance will be held Saturday, Oct. 18.
