The mission of the Center Point-Urbana Community School District is to develop successful, life-long learners by providing a safe and caring environment, a stimulating curriculum, and a dedicated staff working with supportive parents in a friendly, small-town atmosphere.
The mission of the Center Point - Urbana Talented and Gifted program is to provide appropriate opportunities and challenges for gifted and talented students.
Identification for the TAG Program consists of two steps: screening and selection. The screening process, which is done in accordance with state guidelines for identifying gifted students, is ongoing. All students second grade and above take the Iowa Assessments in the spring. Students are screened at the end of 2nd grade, the end of 3rd grade, the end of 6th grade, and the end of 8th grade. Students will be screened automatically if they already are in TAG. Students who score in the top 10% according to local norms proceed to the selection step.
During the selection process, students take a cognitive test called CogAT. This test will assesses verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal performance. Teachers are asked to complete a modified Renzulli Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students checklist for each child who progresses to the selection step. A student's scores from Iowa Assessments, the cognitive test, and the Renzulli Scales are plotted on a modified Identification Matrix.
Students whose scores on the matrix meets or exceeds the set score for their grade level qualify for the TAG program. Students who do not meet the set score but have specific areas of strength will participate in enrichment classes. Letters will be sent home for students who qualify for the TAG program and those who are identified for enrichment through the TAG program.
