A Cappella

About: Currently, CRLS a cappella club has four a cappella groups: Girls Next Door, Pitches and Dos, Sassafras, and Brocappella. Groups are directed by students-leaders and each group has their own schedule for practices and performances. All groups perform during two a cappella jams at CRLS and arrange their own performance outside of school.

Aerospace Engineering/Astronomy

About: Students will learn about astrophysics and naturally occurring events in space (e.g. black holes, supernovae, hypernovae, etc.). We would address questions such as, “how did the universe come to be how it is?,” “how did the universe begin?,” etc

Alpine Ski Club

About: The Ski Club has existed at CRLS for 38 years now, and with the help of the advisors, teachers, chaperones, students, and parents, we have been able to ski approximately 18,100 skier days in New England, the Rocky Mountains, and Canada.

American Sign Language (ASL) Club

Before/Afterschool Orchestra

About: The Before/After School Orchestra is for students who play violin, viola, cello, or upright bass and who couldn't fit the Block 1 Orchestra class into their schedule. Students will rehearse the same music as the Block 1 class and perform at the end-of-semester concert. Regular attendance at rehearsals is crucial whether or not students decide to participate for credit. Rehearsals take place Monday evenings and Fridays before school. Please be sure to fill out the MEDIA RELEASE FORM located in the Family Portal. Credit is optional but not required! Please contact your guidance counselor if you'd like to sign up for credit.
Eligibility: Students should already be proficient on their instrument and know how to read music. If it's your first time in the orchestra, please contact Ms. Umbro to schedule a time to play for her so she can give you the part appropriate for your level. Chamber Music Collaboration

About: The Chamber Music Collaboration is a great program for students proficient at their instrument to get experience playing in smaller groups of duets, trios, quartets, or quintets. Students are placed into groups according to level, instrumentation, and scheduling availability. They rehearse independently as student-led groups for one hour once a week (rehearsal times are decided according to student scheduling availability either before or after school). All chamber groups gather together on 4-5 Wednesday afternoons spread throughout the school year to participate in professional-led Master Classes, and all groups perform in the June concert. We have a collaboration with Radius Ensemble, a professional chamber group. When possible, they may provide coaching for groups. Student-led rehearsals will take place in various designated rooms in the basement of the Arts Building. Master Classes will take place in Room 0607. Student-led rehearsals will typically occur either in the mornings from 7:30-8:30 am or after school from 3:00-4:00 pm, depending on the students' schedules. The Master Classes will occur from 3:00-4:30 pm on 4-5 designated Wednesday afternoons. 1. Please see this CMC Handout with Master Class dates and general expectations. Eligibility: Students must be proficient on their instrument and be able to read music. Auditions usually occur at our first introductory meeting in October - the date will be announced at Club Week.

Club 4

About: Club 4 organizes community service opportunities for CRLS students aimed at helping the homeless community in Cambridge. For example, teams of volunteers shop for, prepare, and serve meals at the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter.

About: Membership in the Derry-Wood Chapter of the NHS is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by the CRLS National Honor Society Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.

UNICEF Club

About: The UNICEF Club at CRLS supports UNICEF’s work to advocate for protecting children's rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. By means of fundraising, advocacy, and education, our club is especially committed to aiding the most disadvantaged children - victims of war, disasters, extreme poverty, all forms of violence and exploitation, and those with disabilities. Established by the United Nations in 1946, UNICEF is the acronym for the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. In 1953, the name was changed to the United Nations Children's Fund, but the UNICEF brand name had been established and has remained its official name to this day. UNICEF works in about 190 countries providing many types of assistance to children and mothers.
