Dual Credit Health 250 (IBCP)
MYP PE/Health I provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions that promote lifelong physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.Β The PE Curriculum enhances cardiovascular fitness, strength training, and flexibility and includes activities in volleyball, basketball, badminton, soccer, flag football, swimming, adventure education, team building as well as other skill development.Β The Health curriculum includes nutrition, weight management, decision making, conflict resolution, communication, stress/anxiety management, human body systems, sexual health education, substance abuse prevention, and topics that promote maintenance of every aspect of an individual's overall health.Β Passing the Health unit fulfills a CPS graduation requirement.Β

Students will engage in a variety of physical activities designed to promote and develop lifelong health and skill-related fitness. Experiences may include, but are not limited to fitness-based activities, fitness testing, health-related concepts, individual and team activities, aquatics, and dance.Β Students will engage in a variety of physical activities designed to promote and develop lifelong health and skill-related fitness. Students will also engage in a driver education course based on the National Driver Development Standard. State-regulated driver and traffic safety education provides the foundation for students, assisted by parents/mentors, to begin the lifelong learning process of reduced-risk driving practices. Students acquire essential knowledge, skills, and experiences to perform reduced-risk driving in varying traffic environments.Β Passing the Driver's Education unit fulfills a CPS graduation requirement.Β

Students will engage in a variety of physical activities designed to promote and develop lifelong health and skill related fitness through participation in individual lifetime physical activities. Activities will include, but are not limited to badminton, weight training, nutrition, walking, dancing, pickleball, track and field, and disc golf.Β

Students will learn the fundamentals of strength training and engage in a variety of physical activities designed to promote muscular strength and endurance. Students will participate in an individualized weight training program in combination with alternating days of physical activities designed to promote cardiovascular endurance. Prepares students to develop a variety of fitness programs.Β

This course will focus on developing and maintaining health related and skill related fitness through participation in various team games and sports in a competitive setting. Team games and sports may include but not limited to: basketball, flag football, soccer, Pickleball, badminton, and volleyball.Β

This introductory course offers high school students an engaging and comprehensive exploration of the human bodyβs systems, movement mechanics, emergency first aid, and foundational exercise principles. Students will delve into the key concepts of physiology, examining how the body's organs and tissues work together to support overall health. Kinesiology will introduce the science of human movement, focusing on how muscles, bones, and joints coordinate to produce functional motions. The course will also cover vital first aid techniques, preparing students to respond confidently and competently in emergencies. Lastly, students will learn about basic exercise science, emphasizing the importance of physical activity for fitness, injury prevention, and well-being. Through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and real-world applications, this class equips students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about health, fitness, and safety.
Key Topics Include:
Overview of human body systems (e.g., circulatory, muscular, respiratory)
Principles of body movement and kinesiology
First aid basics: CPR, injury care, and emergency response
Exercise physiology: benefits, fitness components, and injury prevention
Understanding physical fitness and wellness
By the end of the course, students will gain a foundational understanding of how the body works, how to stay active and healthy, and how to handle emergencies with confidence. The course is designed for students interested in university courses including those specifically related to Physiology, Sports Science, Health Science or Physical Education.

The Physical Education Senior Leader will work to develop leadership skills through peer teaching, focusing on responsibility and communication, while exploring potential careers in coaching and/or education. Students will work side by side with the cluster program to prepare for the Special Olympics by facilitating, coaching, and organizing activities that will improve the fine and gross motor skills of the athletes as well as their health related components of fitness. Senior Leaders will be expected to demonstrate positive attitudes, background knowledge in physical education and fitness, and model good sportsmanship, leadership, and behavior at all times. Β
Grade Level: 12th
Pre-reqs: PE I, PEII, and Approval and Recommendations from:Β Mr. Johansson, current Physical Ed teacher, and Special Education teacher. Priority given to students who are Best Buddies.
Hours/Min per Day:
Trends and issues of personal and community health; stress ways to maintain good physical and mental health; ecology, drugs, alcoholism, human sexuality, nutrition, disease and related topics. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.Β
