Many people think that the primary causes of the Death Gap (reflected in the map below) are violence or poor personal choices.
However, many doctors, activists, and researchers are starting with a different question: why is the legacy of historical redlining (the practice of limiting or denying financial resources to specific neighborhoods based on race and/or social class) so under-acknowledged as factors in community health?
Crane Med Prep's Community Health Equity organizing seeks to educate our students on these systemic roots and uplift organizations working for change.
Will you support our organizing? You can by attending our FREE Community Health Fair + Crime Drought on May 21st. Can't make it? You can affirm your support at our RSVP as well.
Many thanks to the data research team at ChiVes who developed these open source maps. Check out their interactive website for more details and easy to access data and maps of Chicago's neighborhoods.
Final word goes to RUSH University Medical Center President and CEO Omar Lateef, discussing Chicago’s health disparities and how RUSH is partnering with the community to solve them
