Science- In sixth grade science, we use a completely digital program called Amplify, which blends literacy-rich activities and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers. Each unit engages students in a relevant, real-world problem where they investigate scientific phenomena, engage in collaboration and discussion, and develop models or explanations in order to arrive at solutions. Sixth grade topics include Microbiome, Metabolism, Traits & Reproduction, Thermal Energy, Ocean Atmosphere & Climate, Weather Patterns, and Earth's Changing Climate. Many middle school Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will be mastered through our work on these units.
Click below for additional information regarding the NGSS for Parents & Guardians and Family Overviews of our units.
Social Science- The goals of middle school social science, according to Illinois Learning Standards, are to develop students' inquiry, civics, geography, economics, financial literacy, and history skills. We will be using Junior Scholastic and Facing History to foster these skills throughout the year. As we read articles, we will analyze text, diagrams, charts, and maps. Class will focus on discussion, oftentimes including debates, and learning to clearly communicate our ideas in writing.
Below, you will find the R.A.C.E. strategy and an example.
This will help with responding to Close-Reading Questions in Social Studies.
