Discussion boards are the most common form of communication and interaction between students and instructors. Typically discussion boards are associated with fully online courses and hybrids, but occasionally traditional and blended classes will have discussion boards for students to engage with the content and each other.
Discussion boards allow users to post and reply to messages. Replies associated with the same post are grouped together to create message threads that can be expanded or collapsed. Instructors generally control the topics of discussion and have more setting options available to suit the need of different learning activities.
You can use discussions for a variety of purposes. Instances in which discussions can be useful are:
Class discussions
Group discussions
Class debates
Journals
Organization
Discussions has two key terms:
Forums - Umbrella term or overarching category.
Topics - Individuals items that live within forums.
