Phonics: Short Vowel Instruction
This is a group project created by Regina Alvarez, David, Guerrero, and myself, Jenifer Toth. Regina is a literacy intervention teacher. David has a bachelors degree in English literature. I am an elementary teacher, teaching second grade.
Our projects design was created when a need for short vowel sound interventions was observed in the K-2 grade levels. Our team, designed a series of lessons to teach short vowel sounds. These lessons included videos for introduction, verbal responses, kinesthetic movements, written responses, and a formative assessment for each short vowel sound lesson in the series. Unfortunately, due to lack of time, we were not able to complete the entire series. However, we were able to complete the short vowel 'a' lesson. From the formative evaluation and student survey we were able to get a glimpse into how effective our lesson was and where we might need to adjust the lessons in the future.
