2nd Grade
2/12/24 - Kandinsky Trees
In class, we learned about Wasily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was a Russian artist who was famous for expressing himself with bright and vibrant colors. Kandinsky produced this concentric circles painting, which I have based their assignments on. With this assignment, we learned about repetition and practiced color theory.
If you look closely, some of the circle combinations in their trees are equations. On our students' trees, some of their outer circles, when added with the middle circles, 'equal' the circles in their centers. For example, red outer circles plus yellow middle circles equal orange centers, making a secondary color combination. The students had to problem solve to create their trees.

11/18/23 - Watercolor leaves using diffusion paper
Diffusion paper is a thin paper that allows watercolors to easily spread. Students painted watercolor washes on this paper and as a result, their leaves have a sort of tie-dye effect.

11/18/23 - Pattern Leaves
Students learned about patterns, and put their own unique patterns inside autumn leaf shapes. They painted the autumn leaves with watercolor over crayon, which resulted in a wax-resist effect with the paint. Students finished their pieces with permanent marker outlines. I allowed students to take full creative license on patterns and color choices, so their leaves are every color, and not necessarily fall colors. These students have vibrant imaginations and personalities - their leaves reflect that energy!
