OBJECTIVE: Metals 1 students will learn the basics of MIG Welding.
OBJECTIVE: Students will start learning to use the CNC Plasma Table.
Students in Metals 1 will practice making tack welds and running straight beads.
Students were asked to come up with a design that fits within a 4" x 4" square. This design will be cut from carbon steel plate using the school's ArcLight CNC Plasma Table. Designs should be sketched using either Solidworks or Illustrator. There are two documents you must follow to complete this assignment, and both are posted on the CV Safety Page for the CNC Plasma Table. First, read and document entitled Preparing G-Code Using Sheetcam for instructions when preparing the G-Code to run the table. Next, after you have produced the G-Code, use the document entitled Using the ArcLight CNC Plasma Table when out at the machine cutting your part. Once the part is cut, a wire wheel can be used to clean up the part and remove slag. The steel you will be using is 12 Ga (.1046" thick).

DAILY JOURNAL: When is it appropriate to wear long sleeves and gloves in the shop? Why?
Students will start a sheet metal project. For those wanting a more practical project, the sheet metal box was recommended. For those wanting a bit more flexibility and creativity, the sheet metal flower was recommended. Both projects require use of the sheet metal sheer, the brake and tin snips.

A brief introduction to the class was presented. Students were asked to complete this Metals Survey before the next class period.
Students must wear closed-toed shoes and be prepared to tie up hair and remove loose clothing when working in the shop. When in the welding area, long pants and a welding jacket must be worn. Coveralls can be furnished for those students who do not have proper attire to weld. Leather shoes are highly encouraged, as synthetic materials are easily damaged by flying sparks.
Time allowing, talks on safety started, with general shop safety being the first topic.
